Bustling Bangkok

With a population of over 6 million, Bangkok is the bustling, cosmopolitan capital of Thailand. Known for its tropical weather, nightlife, unique cultural pastimes and both ancient temples and high-rise buildings, Bangkok is a city of excitement and contrasts.

Bangkok has a warm, tropical climate with constant year round temperatures ranging from about 22°C to 35°C. The rainy season starts during May and ends in October with September being the wettest month while the cool, dry season which is definitely the most pleasant time to visit starts in November and begins to fade away in February.

Home to hundreds of temples, Bangkok has much to offer in form of cultural exploration. Most of these historical sights are located on the island of Rattanakosin, which is often known as the Old City. Rattanakosin contains within it Bangkok's most popular tourist attraction, the Grand Palace. The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings that has been the official residence of the King of Thailand since 1782, although it is now used mostly for official events with the Monarch residing at Chitralada Palace for most of the year. The Palace is open every day from 08:30 to 16:30 and is a must see for any visitor to Bangkok.

One of Thailand's most famous sports that has grown increasingly popular in the west in recent years is Muay Thai, also known more informally as Thai boxing. As Thailand's national sport it is very much advised to see this great sport which can be done in two venues in Bangkok, Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Silom and Ratchadamnoen Stadium in Rattanakosin. This is without doubt a great way to spend an evening in Bangkok.

Bangkok has its own local film industry producing many internationally acclaimed films such as “Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior” and many English language films have also been filmed here like the comedy “The Hangover Part II”. Cinema tickets are cheap in Bangkok, usually costing around just 120 baht so put aside some time to enjoy this locally made entertainment.

Many festivals take place throughout the year in Bangkok with one of the most famous and peculiar being the traditional Thai new year which is known as the Songkran Festival. This festival takes place in mid April and never passes without notice. During the festival water is thrown from buckets and shot from toy water guns onto passers by. Don't think yourself exempt from this just because you're a tourist either as Thais are non-discriminatory in their celebrations.

Thai cuisine is famous around the world. Ranging from indulgent sweet deserts to spicy hot curries and even for the more adventurous palate, deep fried insects. Traditional Thai food is available throughout the city so there's no excuse for not trying it in your travels. Although a range of international cuisine is also available in many of Bangkoks tens of thousands of places to eat.

We have put together some tips to make travelling by ferry even easier, both on you and on your finances.

1. Start by comparing prices on ferries from Ireland. There are choices available and our price comparison tool can help you get the best deal.

2. Get good travel insurance. It brings peace of mind and helps sort out problems when a problem strikes. You should also bring your European Health Insurance Card. This covers the bare essentials, read about obtaining the EHIC here
   

3. Make sure that you are fully insured. Check your vehicle insurance, compare caravan insurance and don't forget breakdown insurance.
4. Consider using a prepaid money card, this can reduce the cost of foreign currency, and if stolen only the amount on the card is at risk.

5. Measure up. Know the dimensions of your vehicle and caravan/ trailer. The size includes any attachments which may be projecting, such as bike boxes or satellite dishes etc. You will need this information when booking your ferry journey.

6. Be time flexible. Some times and days can be cheaper than others. If you have to travel at a peak period, try reserving your place on the Ferry, well in advance of your travel date.

7. If you intend to bring your pet cat or dog with you on the ferry, check with the Ferry company about the rules relating to pets on board. Read our guide to pet passports. Schedule some time on the journey for seeing to the needs of your pet, eg. Food, water, exercise and more.

8. If you are travelling with young children, this can be both exciting and challenging. Advance planning is definitely the key to on board enjoyment. Pack a bag to bring with you while on the ferry. You know what essentials to pack, baby wipes and all. Have it unopened, in your vehicle, ready to take with you, so that when you leave your car in the lower decks, you do not have the worry of forgetting something. A ferry sailing offers a great opportunity to stretch legs and avail of on board entertainment and views from the deck. Be prepared for sea sickness, just in case. There are usually soft play areas, cinema zones, games, shops and lots more.

9. The advantages of no luggage restrictions can be truly appreciated when you are travelling with children. Take full advantage of it. Pack food for consumption on board, bring drinks, water is recommended. Remember, the water on board is usually non potable. It is OK for washing, but not for drinking.

12. You will be advised of the end of your journey in plenty of time. When waiting in the vehicle deck, please do not start your engines until told to do so by a crew member. This helps to avoid the build up of fumes.

How can I save money with the cycle to work scheme?

The fact that the Cycle to Work Scheme is a tax incentive scheme is a good start.

Through the scheme your employer can pay for your bicycle and bicycle equipment for you.

You then pay back via a salary sacrifice arrangement of up to 12 months.You avoid having to pay tax, PRSI, levies or the Universal Social Charge on your repayments.

It is not compulsory for your employer participate in the scheme.

However if they do, it must be available to all their employees.

What is salary sacrifice ?

Salary sacrifice is the name given to the method of paying back the loan on your bike, accessories and safety equipment.

Deductions are made from gross (this means before income tax, PRSI, pension levies or Universal Social Charge are deducted) rather than net pay for the agreed period (Can't exceed 12 months).

You, therefore,avoid having to pay income tax and PRSI on the value of the bike and equipment (up to €1000 maximum value).

How much in savings can I expect?

Most people on average can expect to save between 30% and 50%.

The actual amount you save depends on your personal tax band, and how your employer operates the scheme.

If you are a higher rate taxpayer then you will save more than a lower rate taxpayer.
