A Guide to Buying Pet Insurance

Category: Pet

There are many factors which influence our decision to purchase pet insurance.

We all want to do the right thing for our four legged friend, but budgets have to be balanced and expenditure justified.

Let us look at exactly what is involved in protecting your pet's welfare and covering against unexpected expenses.

Can I afford to insure my pet?

When money is tight and must be handled carefully it is important to look at the pros and cons of pet insurance in Ireland.

First of all, what will happen if I do not insure against the risks of my pet requiring a serious visit to the vet?

 What are the odds?

Well a recent study showed that 1 in every 3 pets will require unexpected care this year.

Depending not only on the size of your pet, you can be sure that the bill will be substantial.

You may be able to cover the cost of treatment for a gerbil, but what about a dog or a cat or even a horse?

That type of expenditure would put a major dent in your finances.

When that happens, the small amount you might save on an annual premium for pet insurance, gets eaten up by the large sum you may have to pay out in treatment fees.

Consider the stress of having to come up with the finance, at a time when you want to concentrate on helping your family through the injury to your long serving, much loved, family pet.

Worse still, what if you can't afford the treatment and the animal has to be put down?

What does pet insurance cover ?

Pet insurance in Ireland can cover a wide range of circumstances including, vet fees, liability to 3rd parties, death by accident, death from illness, advertising and recovery of lost and found pet, straying/theft, boarding kennel/Cattery fees, Holiday cancellation to name but a few.

How can I maximise cover on a tight budget?

First of all you should compare products, not just prices. What are you getting for your outlay?

Not all pet insurance is the same. Check out what is available, then decide on what is most suited to your needs.

Go for the best cover that you can afford.

Increase excess to reduce the premium if you have to.

We should take into account all the benefits that accrue from having a family pet. Keeping the family pet exercised and healthy will benefit the pet and your budget. Covering the risks makes sense.

Sort it out today and enjoy your pet.

Guide to pet bereavement

Category: Pet

dog in the eveningThe loss of a pet can affect different people in different ways.

It depends, to a large degree on how close we were to the animal, and how much we interacted with it. Feeling a sense of loss is a natural human emotion. We grieve at our own pace. It is good to let our feelings come out at their own pace and express them when they do.

If you are feeling a strong sense of loss try to find a sympathetic friend to talk to. Not everyone understands the loss of a companion animal. You might even feel a bit awkward about having these feelings over a pet.

If you feel at a complete loss as to what to do , Solace Pet Loss Ireland can provide details of a therapist in your region, who may be able to help.

Children need to be informed of the death of their pet in an age appropriate way.

Try to answer their questions as clearly as possible.

This may be their first experience of death, and it will help them to cope with future losses.

Allianz sponsored the publication of an excellent leaflet dealing with the loss of a pet in Ireland,

It was produced in partnership with the Irish Hospice Foundation Bereavement Education Resource Centre and Solace Pet Loss Ireland

You can download a copy of the leaflet here>>>
Grieving the loss of a pet leaflet

Take you time when considering getting a new pet.

It is a very important decision and you should not be rushed into it.

Each pet is different.

It is a new process with each pet.

To sum up, let the sense of grief come out in its own way. Give it time and you will go through the process. Use your friends to help. You know they want to. If it is too much, seek professional help.

Guide to obtaining a Pet Passport in Ireland

Category: Pet

dog with pet passport in a basket

So, you have finally decided, this time you are going to bring your faithful pet on holidays.

Now you can fully enjoy early morning walks by the beach, with Rover fetching every stick for you.

Where do I start?

Well, if your destination is another EU country, then you start with a pet passport.

It is a legal requirement that every Irish pet that is brought out of Ireland to another EU Member State or re-enters Ireland must have an EU Pet Passport.

You can obtain one from your local private vet.

The scheme is EU wide and covers dogs, cats and ferrets.

You can include a photograph of your cat, dog or ferret on the passport.

This photo is optional, but must be no bigger than 6 cm wide and 4 cm long, feature the pet only and show its colour and markings clearly.

Imagine the fun you will have taking that one.

It doesn't say anything about smiling or not.

I suppose it depends on whether or not your cat is from Cheshire.

When you collect the passport from your veterinary practice, make sure that all entries are correct and can be read easily, as the consequences of errors can be major and could result in your pet being detained in quarantine, for which you will have to pay.

What does a pet passport contain ?

It contains details relating to your pet’s health and vaccination history.

It must provide details of your pet’s microchip number and evidence of an up-to-date rabies injection and a blood test confirming that the vaccination has taken effect.

The microchip must be contained under the skin.

The order in which the information is obtained is important.

First you must have the microchip implanted and recorded.

Then arrange the vaccination, followed by the blood test to confirm that the vaccination has been effective.

Pet dogs must also have a specified tapeworm treatment.

Talk to your vet about the details and timing of these tests and treatments.

There are time limits for these tests, so get them organised as soon as possible.

What else should I do?

You should plan ahead for the transport details.

Can your pet travel in the cabin, or must it be placed in the hold ?

Cats, dogs and ferrets can only travel to other countries on certain sea, air and rail routes so make sure to use an approved route.

Our advice is to plan as early as possible, so as to make sure that you meet all of the time limits.

Check your pet insurance policy to see if it covers travel abroad.

Some policies exclude this.

If in doubt, contact us and one of our qualified experts will help you.

For further inquiries on the pet passport scheme you can contact the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine on +353-1-6072827 or email pets@agriculture.gov.ie

The scheme is an excellent one and is designed to protect EU citizens from the spread of rabies and certain other diseases.

  Pet Insurance in Ireland

It is good to think of the great advances in the treatments available to injured and sick pets.

Vets and pet owners can choose from a wide variety of procedures to get the family pet back to good health. Some years ago, without their availability, families would have suffered the loss of their pet.

We need to acknowledge that these advances have put a new element into the family budget, namely veterinary bills. When planning the family budget we should include something to protect against unexpected expenses.

The odds are increasing. 1 in every 3 pets will require unexpected care this year.

Thankfully with low cost pet insurance you can reduce the impact of these unplanned expenses.

Life changing decisions.

Who wants to have to decide on the life or death of the family pet, based solely on whether or not you can afford the treatment ? You don't have to.

Take out pet insurance now and spread the cost into manageable amounts.

You can relax and enjoy your pet, knowing that you have things covered.

Pet insurance can range from major surgery to other pet outgoings.

Can I bring my dog with me on holidays to an EU country ?

Yes. Thanks to the introduction of what is commonly known as the pet passport scheme, you can now avoid the cost and inconvenience of quarantine, provided you follow all of the steps required by the scheme.

See the Pet Passport Guide below for more information.

You should also make sure that your pet insurance policy covers travel abroad. Not all policies do.

See the premier policy or the premier plus  policy details on the quotation form below.
